My Kind of Customer!
There are many articles and blogs telling you what you should look for, and what questions you should ask when you are hiring a DJ. They can be very informative and give you a lot of great questions to ask. I’d be happy to answer any of them any time you like.
I thought I’d “flip the script” and write a post about the kind of customer I am looking for as a wedding Disc Jockey and Master of Ceremonies.
See, when I meet with potential couples, whether they know it or not, I’m interviewing them as much as they are interviewing me. The services I provide, and in my opinion the services any good wedding DJ should provide, are so personalized that I want to be sure that our personalities match. If, for some reason, I feel that I am not a match, I am more than happy to refer another DJ in the area that I think would be a better match for you and your ideas of the perfect wedding.
“Wait! You are willing to turn down business?!?!”
If I know my performance style might not be the right fit for you for whatever reason, I’d much rather refer you to another wedding another professional that I know is a better match for what you are looking for than just take your money and your business for myself.
Here are the numbers:
On average 26,000 weddings happen every year in the Valley of the Sun. I’m only looking to provide amazing entertainment at about 40 of them.
There are plenty of weddings to go around and plenty of customers with which to work.
So with that said, here are some of the things I am looking for from my couples.
You don’t have to have all of these qualities, but I’d prefer you have most of them. 😉
Love
I am a wedding DJ so therefore “love” is very important to every aspect of what I do. I want a couple that is so crazy in love with one another that they can barely contain themselves! I love it when couples hold hands when we meet, and when they have smiles on their faces as they talk about how they met and fell in love. I like it when couples are finishing each others sentences when I ask how he proposed because they are both so excited to tell the story.
Excitement/Fun
I like it when couples are looking to have a great time at their wedding. They want their reception to be a true celebration, not just a pretty dinner party. They are open to trying to find moments in their wedding where something special can happen. They are willing to read a book like “The Best Wedding Reception…..Ever!” This book is guaranteed to help you plan a FUN and ENTERTAINING wedding. It is filled with over 200 ideas. Using just one of them at just the right time can create a special moment that your friends and family talk about for years to come!
Strong Vision yet Easy Going
It might seem like a contradiction but it’s not. I love couples that have a real sense of who they are and what they want out of their wedding, but are also realistic enough to “go with the flow” when we are in the middle of the reception. A wedding reception contains a ton of moving parts that are all working together to make a special evening. When I create my couple’s “Entertainment Schedule” I put a time down for when the ceremony is going to start. I then write this sentence, “All times from here on out will be approximate.” I never want my couples to feel like they are “behind schedule” because there’s really no such thing. We have the order of the events and we will get to all of them in a very natural way before the evening has ended.
Price/Value
“How much do you charge for a wedding?”
It’s the first question I’m emailed. It appears to be the first, and possibly only thing on many couples minds when it comes to hiring a DJ for a wedding. It’s not surprising. Most couples have never hired a DJ before, so it’s only natural to not know which questions to ask or what to look for. Lucky for you, I even wrote a blog about what questions to ask.
“Reassuringly Expensive”-It was a slogan that was used by the beer company “Stella Artois”. It’s really a great slogan but what does it mean? In my opinion it means that although the price might be more than what competitors are charging, that should reassure you that you are getting something of quality.
I couldn’t say it any better so here are some words from my mentor, trainer, and friend Mark Ferrell:
“Your clients must keep in mind that an average price equals what is average in your market. If average is what they desire, there’s plenty to go around. . . and it’s a roll of the dice because there are some decent DJs at an average price, but there are also some atrocious DJs at an average price. The atrocious ones can hide in the preponderance of average-priced DJs because that’s where the majority of DJs live – in the middle of the bell curve. However, “decent” or “atrocious” can’t exist in the high price range. Only DJs who can deliver at a high price can exist there. Most clients, once they understand this, don’t want an average-priced DJ . . . because they don’t want an average event.”
